Sporting a rather bemused look on his face, and hand crafted & hand painted by Raymundo Santiago in his family workshop in Arrazola, Oaxaca, this rabbit alebrije features lovely detailed painting on a brilliant turquoise blue background and a charming bird painting on his back amid flowers and pointillist dots.
Alebrijes are brightly colored sculptures of fantastical creatures that have become some of the most recognizable folk art creations of Mexico. Painted with bright colors and designs in small family workshops in villages in Oaxaca, Mexico, each family or artisan develops their own repertoire of carving and painting styles. Carved figures vary from recognizable animal shapes such as dogs, rabbits and chickens, to the more outlandish fire-spitters and naguals
(human-faced animals). The carvings are very much based in the religious and everyday life of the people who make it. They can be mysterious and at the same time friendly and approachable. The carvers capture the immediate world of village life and the universal world of dreams.
