Commonly known as "Temple Toys," these sculptural figures date back to the early-to-mid 19th Century India where they were left by the devout at Hindu temples as devotional offerings. Temple toys would have been played with by children waiting for their parents during temple services at the temple.

Since ancient times, a person was held in high esteem for the donation of a horse or other animal to one of the Gods. It was believed that these  figures allowed the God to come to the aid of the devotee in times of need.

This horse is heavy and the sculptural details are full of artisanal charm and irregularities.
The wheels turn independently and roll freely and are attached to bars of wood that appear to have been added at a later time as the patina is different. It has clearly been loved and well used by generations of children.

Please look at the pictures as they are considered an important part of the description.
